Homeroom Notes

Playing Cards

An assignment in my graphic design 3 class to create a deck of cards. Homeroom notes is a deck of cards inspired by K-12 education. Suits were changed to common core subjects and face cards are centered around faculty and staff within the education system.

Deck of cards have many uses to them from playing games to deciding who is taking out the trash for the day. What I wanted to focus on is the education stand point. Homeroom Notes is taking the normal French-suited playing cards and designing them for the classroom. The preview set of 8 cards, 5 number cards and 3 face cards, shows off the newly designed suits for the core subjects. Going deeper into the redesign of the suits, they each are a common icon for the subject they represent whether it is math, science, language arts, or social studies. The suits themselves each are designed to have the face cards become a staff member. I played with simple shapes and mirroring to create complicated figures and objects to make it easy to read for kids of all ages and accessible for anyone. For the back of the cards, I experimented with patterns and textures. Using it took make it look as if the chalkboard was written and doodled on.
